Safety Walk Template

The safety walk template gives leaders a structured routine for spending time where work happens — observing conditions and behaviors, having real conversations with the people doing the work, and capturing the barriers that need to be removed. It turns 'walking the floor' from a habit into a system with a standard, a cadence, and follow-through.

When to use it

The situations it fits

  • When safety depends on a few audits a year instead of daily leadership attention
  • When incidents or near-misses repeat and the same conditions keep showing up
  • When leaders want to be visible on the floor but lack a structure for what to do there
  • When you want every level of leadership — not just the safety team — owning safety

How to use it

Step by step

  1. 1.Set the cadence: who walks, where, and how often — and put it in leader standard work
  2. 2.During the walk, observe conditions and behaviors against your standards
  3. 3.Talk with the people doing the work — ask what makes their job harder or less safe
  4. 4.Record findings and barriers on the template as you go
  5. 5.Assign every action an owner and a date, then close the loop visibly

Illustrative example

What it looks like in practice

A plant manager walks the packaging area every Tuesday morning with the template. She notes a guard that operators keep removing because it slows changeovers, asks the crew why, and learns the guard blocks access to a sensor. The action isn't 'retrain operators' — it's an engineering fix with an owner and a date, reviewed at the next walk.

This example is illustrative, not a client case study.

Common mistakes

What to avoid

  • Treating the walk as an inspection to catch people, rather than a conversation to remove barriers
  • Recording findings but never assigning owners or closing the loop
  • Walking the same route every time and missing the areas that need attention most
  • Letting the cadence slip when production gets busy — exactly when it matters most
